Canadian Retention/Resumption of Citizenship Information:
In case you were born outside Canada after February
14, 1977 to a Canadian parent, you are a Canadian
citizen. However, if your Canadian parent
was also born outside Canada to a Canadian parent,
you have to take certain steps to keep your Canadian
citizenship.
According to Canadian Federal and provincial previous
law was people born in the 2nd or following generations
outside Canada have to submit an application
to retain their citizenship, and to either live
in Canada for one year or prove a significant
connection or relationship proof to Canada before
their 28th birthday. If they did not do either
of these things, they would have lost their Canadian
Citizenship, at times without even knowing.
This old law was criticized for being complex,
confusing, and leads to uncertainty for most
of the people about their citizenship status.
However this new law simplifies rules by eliminating
following requirements.
If somebody who was born outside Canada in the
second generation turned 28 before April 17,
2009, and did not take proceed to retain his
or her citizenship, they are no longer considered
a Canadian citizen as of their 28th birthday.
Most important this new law will not restore their
citizenship. All those people who ceased to be
Canadian citizens can apply to resume their Canadian
citizenship before their 28th Birthday.

submitted at the Embassy are always forwarded
to the Registrar of Canadian Citizenship in Sydney,
